Presently a number of tests are conducted by various states/ engineering
colleges for entrance to various professional and technical programmes in the
country. Multiplicity of such tests causes immense mental and financial burden
on students and their parents without adding any value to the system.
As per Guidelines for Deemed Universities, admissions to the identical courses
are required to be made on an All-India basis through a common entrance test.
In view of this, there have been attempts to hold an All India Engineering
Entrance Examination for past some time. This finally fructified in the year
2002, when the first AIEEE was conducted.
The responsibility of conducting All India Engineering Entrance Examination
(AIEEE) is assigned to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The
Entrance Examination is designed in such a manner that the students coming from
rural background are not put to any disadvantage.
Seat Allocation in NITs through AIEEE
Students who have cleared the cut-off mentioned by the Counselling Board of
AIEEE are called for centralized counselling where the seats are allocated
depending on the student’s rank and his/ her preference of bracnches/ colleges.
In the year 2009 the cut-off for the GE category to be eligible for centralized
counselling was 100 marks.
In each NIT, 50% of the seats are reserved for the students who have appeared
for the Qualifying examination (+2 or equivalent) in that state. All the
remaining seats in the NITs are allocated as per the candidate’s national rank.
Syllabus for AIEEE
Syllabus for the test is based on common minimum syllabus drawn from different
State Boards of School Education. Syllabus is available in the brochure for
AIEEE. Timing of the examination is such that the students can fully use their
preparations for Class 12 Examination. It is usually conducted in the end of
April or beginning of May every year.
Pattern of AIEEE
Till the year 2005, AIEEE examination comprised of two compulsory papers for which all the students appear and one additional paper meant only for the B.Arch aspirants. Paper 1 contained Physics and Chemistry; Paper 2 contained Mathematics. The weightage for the three subjects was the same but the number of questions and even the time duration of the paper varied. Please refer to the table below
| 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005* |
| Paper 1:P – 75 Q; C – 75 Q 150 min | Paper 1: P – 75 Q; C – 75 Q 150 min | Paper 1: P – 75 Q; C – 75 Q 150 min | Paper 1: P – 75 Q; C – 75 Q 150 min |
| Paper 2: M – 75Q | Paper 2: M – 75Q | Paper 2: M – 75Q | Paper 2: M – 75Q |
| Negative Marking: 4:1 | Negative Marking: 4:1 | Negative Marking: 3:1 | Negative Marking: 3:1 |
* Differential marking was introduced in AIEEE for the first time in the year 2005. There were questions carrying 1.5, 3 and 4.5 marks.
| AIEEE NOW
The Examination now comprises of two papers – Paper 1 for aspirants of B.Tech and Paper 2 for aspirants of B.Arch. Detailed scorecards with rank / Marks are put up on the web site along with the results.
* In AIEEE 2008 and AIEEE 2009 there were Assertion Reasoning and comprehension type questions other than the regular Multiple Choice Questions. AIEEE 2010 The Central Board of Secondary Education conducted the 9th
All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) on 25th April 2010 in 84
cities all over the country and in 2 cities abroad.
Students aspiring to do the B.Arch/ B.Planning courses appeared for Paper 2 which was conducted from 14.00 to 17.00 hrs. This exam consisted of Mathematics, Aptitude on drawing & architecture and a drawing test. Eligibility Criteria The minimum academic qualification for admission through AIEEE is a pass in the final examination of 10 + 2 (class XII) or its equivalent examinations (see table of equivalent examinations below). The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination shall be limited to 03 (three) uniformly for all the candidates in consecutive years. The candidates passed +2 exam in 2008, 2009 or appearing in +2 in 2010 are only eligible to appear in AIEEE-2010. Candidates passed +2 in 2007 or before or appearing in 2011 are NOT eligible to appear in AIEEE-2010.
